Real-time connectivity ensures smooth services in public transport

Operators and authorities that are responsible for the public transport infrastructure have a responsibility to ensure smooth service availability as well as safety for the people who travel. Intelligent technology plays a key role in this, and as we speak, an increasing amount of intelligent real-time software is being deployed behind the scenes to achieve this.

Digitalisation and real-time 4G/5G mobile network connectivity have enabled the industry to continue its shift towards always-connected, fully-interconnected systems. Two examples of this are illustrated below.

1. Real-time video surveillance for safety

CCTV systems are very commonplace nowadays. Whilst issues around individual privacy need to be kept in mind, most people have learned to appreciate the safety aspect of being “on camera” in public places. The change that is happening now is that these video security systems are increasingly connected in real-time to central systems, which, for example, allows authorities to access live video footage from a moving train, or the train driver to see live video from the station he is approaching. There is also plenty of room to innovate more safety-related applications for passengers. One such innovation is the “connected zone” concept launched by Teleste, where passengers are able to seek personal safety assurance via a mobile app within predetermined geo-fenced areas.

2. Situational awareness

Public transport operators and authorities have a 24/7 need to remain aware of what’s going on within their infrastructure. They also need to be able to react fast to unexpected events and incidents. Again, digital software systems can bring a new level of intelligence to these environments.

Expanding beyond video security, the new ”situational awareness” management systems have been designed to combine sensory data and information from several systems, such as alarm systems, access control systems, CCTV systems, and so on, and have all this displayed on a graphical management user interface for the operating personnel. Additionally, the system will assist in reacting fast when unwanted incidents occur. This can be achieved through added intelligence and automated operating procedures.

For technology companies like Teleste, these technical innovations require significant investments in R&D. We are committed to continuing our innovation capability for the benefit of our customers and for a safer and smoother tomorrow.
